The ongoing intensive processes of degradation of the natural capital resulted in the necessity for effective conservation of non-renewable natural resources. The implementation of the principles of sustainable development is particularly important in agriculture, which has a strong impact on the natural environment. The specifics of agriculture are the side effects of the conducted agricultural activities, which are both positive and negative externalities. There is a need for creating comprehensible indicators that will enable synthetic evaluation of agricultural holdings sustainability, including its internal organisation (interconnection between plant and animal production) and the relationship with the natural environment. The goal of the study is to determine the level of sustainability of individual agricultural holdings and the relevant factors on the basis of FADN data and questionnaire-based field research. The research involves 11 283 agricultural holdings covered by FADN system in 2008. There were 6 types of farming of agricultural holding considered in this analysis, namely: specialist in fieldcrops (type 1), specialist in rearing grazing livestock (type 4), specialist in rearing granivores (type 5), non-specialist with mixed crops (type 6), non-specialist with mixed livestock (type 7), non-specialist with mixed crops and livestock (type 8).
